A 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 Sounds Amazing On A Hill Climb

Although I’m a big fan of the PORSCHE 917 and the 935/78 Moby Dick, the 906 Carrera 6 will always have a special place in my heart. It was the last street-legal race car Porsche ever made. All of the successors were purely built for the race track, with no road tax. Built back in 1966, just 50 examples were made. If that doesn’t make it rare and unique, nothing does.

The 906 represents a golden era of motor racing. The cars back then were light and not particularly powerful, but the racing was fierce. The Porsche 906 Carrera 6 weighed just 580 kilograms. The six-cylinder Boxer racing unit developed ‘just’ 220 horsepower, but it had no trouble competing with larger 8-cylinder rivals. It also made the 906 sound marvellously good, as you’re about to find out in this three-minute video.
