Cracking noises from the sun?

Hey guys.

I picked up a '99 Boxster (perfect shape, 30K miles) about 7 months ago. It's been an absolutely fantastic car. The only thing at all "wrong" with it is it makes some weird cracking and popping noises when I first start to drive it after it's been sitting in the sun for awhile on a hot day. Usually when I go over a pump, or uneven pavement.

It seems to stop when the car reaches a cooler temp, so I'm assuming it's from something in the dash/windshield area that expands due to heat.

Am I right about this, is it common, and can anything be done about it?

It doesn't seem to be a big deal, but it would be cool if there was a fix.

Thanks.

My windshield will make a loud cracking noise due to thermal stress from time to time. Sounds just like a rock hit it and can be quite loud. However this happens when no other cars are around so I'm pretty sure that's not it. The only "fix" that I'm aware of is to replace the windshield as my understanding is that even though it's still watertight the adhesive has become partly debonded.

Mine does the same thing. Loud Pop noise within the first block or two after it has been in the sun.

cracking noise

My 2001's windshield also will crack several times after sitting in the sun. Most noticable when it enters a cooler area. The dealer installed a new windshield when I bought the car 10 months ago. I think it is the metal frame around the windshield expanding and contracting as the temperature changes.

On the right type of freeway surface (concrete like 101 through Gilroy or 680 by Union City) the cracking noise occurs more frequently. It sound just like stones from the cars in front. However, there are minimal chips in the paint.

Yeah, that's the same sound I get. And I know it isn't rocks because it always happens after sitting in the sun for a decent amount of time. And it never happens on cold or rainy days.

It'd be nice if there was a way to "fix" it.
