brake job

rear brake warning light just came on. any suggestion for the street brake pads?? should i change the front brake pads while i am doing the back?? what about the rotors, do i need to change them? i have a 2003 2.7l bought it used 3 years ago(22k miles), now has 38k miles on it, this is my first brake job since i bot it 3 yrs ago.

I would be extremely surprised if you need rear brakes at 38K.
The warning light (which doesn't discriminate front/back) is very likely for the fronts.
The rule of thumb is that the rear brakes last two to three time longer than the fronts and generally you need to replace the rotors with every second set of pads replaced.
So my guess is that you need to replace just the front pads at this time.
You can inspect each side with a flashlight without having to remove the wheel.
Look at the thickness of the pad against the rotor and you can determine the wear. Less than 3 mm you want to replace.



I think the best choice is the OEM pads (for daily driving).
If you track the car then a specialized pad would be better.
