2007 Tahoe West Coast Babblers Boxsterfest Poll

Do you plan to attend the 2007 West Coast Babblers BoxsterFest to be held in the North Lake Tahoe, CA area?

The 2007 West Coast Babblers BoxsterFest will be here sooner than you think. Be sure to set aside October 18-21, 2007 (for 3 nights) if you are planning on attending this gala event. The Babbler's organizing committee would like to take a poll on who is interested in attending this event. More details will follow soon. So stay tuned! And "Save the date" for Thursday, October 18th thru Sunday, the 21st, 2007.

The Babbler's organizing committee is still working on the details so the only pricing that's firmly established at this point is the room rates. Approximate cost will be $109 p/night for a room. Events will include driving events, do it yourself instructional events (hosted by Pedro from PPBB), the option to join the Boxster Bus to dinner on Friday, an optional banquet on Saturday, lots of free swag, and the chance to meet lots of other Boxster and Porsche folk.

Please answer one on the poll:

Definitely attending
Probably attending
Not sure yet, may attend
Probably not attend

About the Cal Neva Resort for starters

A Sneak preview

This is going to be a really great weekend for those that can make it.

Things kick off on Thursday night in the world famous Indian Room at the Cal Neva Resort. Here you'll be able to register for the BoxterFest and stand in two States at the same time. Play in a Blackjack Tournament. Enjoy Hors D'oeuvre and have a few drinks. The early arriver's can enjoy watching the sun set across the lake and mountains.

The infamous Indian Room fireplace is separated by the California/Nevada State line and is the museum anchor of the Resort. Burned to the ground in 1937, this room was remodeled as a mirror image of the previous Lodge. The hard wood floors and grand granite fireplace lend an intimate setting with the old Tahoe feel.

The Circle Bar is found inside the main lobby of the hotel with its beautiful glass dome and original wood carvings still encircling the outside. The dome was handcrafted and contains over 7,000 pieces of individually cut glass. It is a favorite gathering spot for hotel guests and locals alike. Sitting at the bar you can enjoy the pink and red sunsets over the Sierra Mountains, have your favorite drink and watch the sailboats move across the clear blue lake or take in your favorite sports game in the Circle Bar Lounge.

More to follow soon!

From the Babbler's organizing committee (Tom M, Paralizer, Bryan, Boxsterbob, Gerry, dedes and George g and the spouses & girlfriends) are putting what they consider to be a terrific event together and certainly hope to see you there!

Kimberlie and I are going to try to attend but the big drawback is that the 3rd week end of every month is typically my Navy Drill Week End.

Dean Martin cabin...?

Will any of the celebrity cabins be available? Just saw the program on one of the relatively obscure cable/satellite stations where a couple psychics 'channel' the ghosts of celebrities past. They went to the Cal-Neva
searching for ol' blue eyes, Marilyn, and RFK. Bobby K stayed at the C-N the week before Marilyn's death. Lots of 'interesting' history in the place. Some friends worked at the C-N in the '60s & 70s...said it was a favorite hangout for distinguished members of the underworld to bring their 'nieces' for a little
R&R. Should be a prime venue for the Boxster crowd. Is Joey Bishop the only member of the Rat Pack still alive?

Since were close to Halloween for the WCBF 2007 here is a story that I found about the haunted past at Cal Neva. Enjoy!

Cal Neva’s Haunted Past
Written by Alex Close/Tahoe World
Wednesday, 06 December 2006

Underneath Cal Neva’s property lies a series of tunnels. It was Old Blue Eyes who installed most of these to travel undetected between his various offices, stages, the casino itself his cabin, Ms. Monroe’s cabin … virtually anyplace on the grounds could be accessed by these secret underground hallways.

As our tour guide, Carl, led us through the caverns and tunnels, he explained about Marilyn’s light, which has no switch but goes on and off unexplainably. The incandescent light — which thankfully came on for us — illuminates Marilyn’s stairs.

This, Carl explained, is a haunted place. Supernatural energy resides at this spot. Séances have been held here, psychics have come here, Discovery Channel shows have been filmed here. In all honesty, the air felt heavy on those stairs.

Inside Marilyn’s cabin, stories of flickering lights and séances are told with the utmost sincerity.

Unfortunately, Marilyn did not make an appearance on our tour.

After meandering through dressing rooms, haunted stages, Frank and his friends’ cabins, even past a memorial cross for Jimmy Hoffa, we eventually came back to the casino floor where just about every employee seemed to have a ghost story.

Some of them even had photos of ghost figures to back up their tales.

At the dares of employees, we made a trip down to the first floor. Supposedly there are eerie energies at the end of the hallway and the air is always cold. Room 101 sits at the end across from the fire escape and is always the last room in the hotel to be rented.

According to legend, there was a suicide at that end of the hallway and the spot has been haunted ever since.

We took a self-proclaimed psychic that we found at one of the card tables down with us.

Neither she nor any of us felt anything. The air was cold, but the draft seemed to come from the fire escape.

Good Tables

Maybe the coolest thing at CalNeva is the $3 minimum black jack tables. For us poor-as-church-mice low-life locals, three dollars a hand is a welcome sight in a time when even $5 minimum tables are disappearing. I’m not a gambler. I stay away from the tables because they have never paid me anything. And I do mean never.

Maybe it was the ghost of Marilyn sitting next to me, I thought I felt a woman’s hand on my behind at one point. Or maybe Ole’ Blue Eyes was influencing the dealer for me. With my historical luck at the tables, the supernatural must have been with me because I walked away from that table with $15 extra in my pocket.

A Bite to Eat

The Lakeview Dining Restaurant’s buffet was still open for us when we needed a late dinner. Despite the warning of two other patrons that the buffet food was cold, we dove right in. It was definitely not cold.

With pork, mashed potatoes, meat loaf, soup, veggies and multiple dessert options the buffet was all that and more. Anytime you can sit down and eat until you can’t move, you know you’ve found a good thing.

Also a good option are the made to order sandwiches, turkey, ham, roast beef, various cheeses — anything you want slapped between your choice of bread.
After our walking tour of the haunted and historical places on the property and underneath it, a spooky addition was our waitress, whose name tag said Romania but who told us she hailed from Transylvania.

She didn’t attempt to bite anyone’s neck, and the food she served was delicious.

Boxsterfest

Walt and I hope to be able to attend Friday thru Sunday. Can't make a commitment at this time since our grandchild is expected shortly and will be very critical at that time since he will be born with a half heart and will be having several open heart surgeries. We may not be able to commit until shortly before the event.
