Unhappy Top Problem

Has anyone experience problems with their convertible top on their Boxster ?
Me and my buddy both have 97 Boxsters and both our tops are not working properly. Does anyone know of any recalls on this problem ?
Thanks

Can you describe what the problem is in a bit more detail? There are just soooo many things that it could be.

Notorious problem

the pre-2000 model are plaged with problem related to the top mechanism. Before 2000 they use to have a non-reinforced-sheilded cable. the end of the cable was wearing and thus there was a "loose" introduced in the system and on side of the mechanism was pulling while the other was not... this lead to the mechanism to snap.

When this happen the dealer wants to replace the whole transmission/cable (the new reinforce cable does not fit in the new mechanism. But there is a way to fix that problem without replacing everything

take a look at Rentech there are a few thread on the topic. Jeff (toolpant) posted a bunch of pictures that explain in detail the problem/procedure for the open top surgery

Top

At these time the top is manual operation. When the top was working there was a loud clacking sound and the top when up at a angle. I removed some pieces from it in order to get it to go up and down. I called the dealer in Walnut Creek and talked to Eric in the service dept. and he said" it could cost me up to $2000.00 to fix it " I'm not ready to spend that much . The next week my buddy's did the same thing., so I'm wondering if this is a normal proble with the Boxsters. If so, is there any kind of recall on this problem.
Thanks Boxsterboy67

You definitely want to check out this thread on RennTech.org. While it may not solve all your problems it will certainly give you some insight into what's probably gone wrong.
