Strange sound when ignition key turned on.

It was suggested by one of your associates that I post the following on the BABBLERS Board since I did not get much of a reply from the PPBB posting. So here goes.

"This morning I had occasion to switch the ignition key to the on position (but not start the car) while standing outside the car by reaching through the window. I had just changed oil and I wanted to get a reading from the dash mounted oil level monitor. For the first time I heard what I assume to be the fuel pump and maybe some other pump start up. I have never noticed this noise before when starting the car while in the drivers seat, even with the top down, and I was wondering if this was normal or if something has developed a problem

What I am hearing is hard to describe but sounds something like the front lamps on my old 944 coming to raised position when I turned the lights on. The sounds last 2 to 3 seconds with a change in pitch half way through, returning to the same sound as when the key was first turned on for the final second. The sound is clearly audible when you are standing outside the car and seems to be coming from the front trunk. As I said I am a bit concerned and wonder if I pinched a fuel/oil/water line or cable of some sort when I jacked the car up, thus the sound.

Porsche assures me the sound I am hearing is normal and seems strange to me simply because I am hearing it for the first time. If anyone out there would be so kind as to stand outside their car and switch on the ignition key to see what they hear I would appreciate it. Thanks."

I realize that what I am hearing to the fuel pump however the change in the sound halfway through the 3 second cycle is a bit disconcerting and I would like to know if others have the same? Thank you.

I just did the test on my '97

No TC, or PSM, or lits. I opened the front trunk and turned on the key front outside the car as if I was checking the oil level after a change. Same sound for 2 or 3 seconds. It must be the fuel pump in inside the tank. Sounds like every other electric in-tank fuel pump I have heard. Since my tank is almost empty I can hear it real good.

You can't pinch a fuel line during an oil change. The line is plastic and it runs near the center tunnel with the water lines to the front radiators. The fuel filter itself is in the center tunnel.

Bet you did not know the Boxster has a plastic fuel line.

i always assumed that it was the litronic lights, maybe doing a high-beam test or something.

I had 2 Fiat X1/9s with motorized

pop-up headlights, just like a 944. The motors made the same sound Louis described when the lights went up or down, so I had an idea of what he was talking about.

Now I can hear a similar sound from the Boxster electric fuel pump. I wonder when the Boxster fuel pump is going to break.

I thought the lines ran along the outside...

of the car. Are those brake lines only?
