Porsche To Discontinue 996 Carrera After 2003 Model Year

Porsche To Discontinue 996 Carrera After 2003 Model Year; New Boxster Models To Replace It In The Product Line in 2004

ATLANTA, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Just after announcing the new Porsche 911 Targa, back from a five-year hiatus, Porsche Cars North America announced that it will offer an expanded line of its Boxster models.

Porsche will produce two lines of Boxster-inspired sports cars. The current line remains unchanged and a new line will be added. This new line will be referred to as the Boxster 3-plus Series (referring to engine displacement). Here is the 3-plus Series line up coming in 2004:

1. Boxster 986 Coupe with the company's standard 3.4L engine powering the two rear wheels
2. Boxster 9864S with the company's standard 3.4L engine powering all four of its wheels
3. Boxster 986 Targa with the largest sunroof in the industry (also powered by the 3.4L engine)
4. Boxster 986TT which will be powered by the same Twin Turbo engine used in the current 996TT model

The 986TT will come with 465HP making it the most powerful convertible the company has ever produced.

And what about the demise of the company's 911 product? While the timing of the news was unexpected, the industry has known for some time that there's only so much performance that can be gotten out of a rear-engined sports car. "Porsche has done a great job of getting the most out of a 50-year old design, it's time to move on" said race car driver Hurlee Aywood.

But the move comes as a total surprise to industry analysts. "Apparently Porsche is finally admitting what Boxster owners already know, that the Boxster with its mid-engine layout, is a superior automobile and, when given power equal to the 911, will maximize its performance" said Charles Hammer-Smith.

Porsche Cars North America, Inc., (PCNA), based in Atlanta, Georgia and its subsidiary, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., are the exclusive importers of Porsche vehicles for the United States and Canada. A wholly owned, independent subsidiary of Porsche AG, PCNA employs approximately 200 people who provide Porsche vehicles, parts, marketing and training for its 204 dealers in North America.

What does that mean Tom?

Are you referring to something on the other board? As you know, I don't "do the other board" so I'm unaware of what boardsmanship they're up to today.
