Porsche Announces Cayenne Crossing Initiative

Porsche(R) Announces Cayenne Crossing Initiative

Company Forms Partnerships to Reclaim America's Paved and Unpaved Roads;

Actor James Brolin Named Chairperson

CHICAGO, Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) today announced a multi-year program designed to reclaim America's paved and unpaved roads. Called the Cayenne Crossing Initiative and chaired by actor James Brolin, the program will include a variety of U.S. road restoration and maintenance projects along a route that stretches from coast to coast.

"Nearly two years ago, Porsche invited me to join a small group of journalists to cross the Mojave Road," said Brolin. "One of the impressions I took away is that historic trails like the Mojave Road wouldn't exist without the efforts of dedicated groups of people who maintain trails, thereby protecting the environment. We asked ourselves how we might form dedicated groups to further these kinds of efforts in a variety of locations across the country on both paved and unpaved roads, and the Cayenne Crossing Initiative was born."

Cayenne Crossing Initiative partners will include non-profit groups and clubs as well as state and local entities. Projects in the program are diverse, but each is designed to both improve paved and unpaved roads and increase public awareness.

Named for the upcoming Porsche sport utility vehicle, the Cayenne Crossing Initiative is also a tour through America's most scenic places and will include a great deal of pavement and many remaining segments of Route 66.

"At the beginning of our Mojave Road adventure, we crossed a lonesome paved road," said Brolin. "It was part of historic Route 66 but had no markings. There is a group that would like to improve the situation, the California Route 66 Preservation Foundation. Working with San Bernardino County, California, and the Bureau of Land Management office in Needles, California, the group will erect three information kiosks as part of the Cayenne Crossing Initiative. They will help to identify the road and convey the history of Route 66."

Porsche will also work with the Illinois Department of Transportation in supporting a calendar contest that promotes its Adopt-A-Highway and Litter Free Highways in Illinois programs. Porsche is convinced its involvement will inspire clubs and groups to participate in the Illinois programs.

Coordinating the off-highway portion of the Cayenne Crossing Initiative under its "Restoration for Recreation" program is TreadLightly!, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting ethical land and waterway use and educating the public on how to recreate with minimal impact to the environment. Porsche is a corporate sponsor of TreadLightly!

In the west, the San Bernardino National Forest Association has agreed to restore the original trail that leads to Big Bear Lake, known as Clark's Grade.

In the east, TreadLightly! will administer a grant that will be used by the U.S. Forest Service to support the construction of a crossing at Peter's Mill Creek, a trout stream in Virginia's George Washington National Forest. Currently threatened by vehicle travel, the stream lies in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

Porsche will also make use of the Cayenne Crossing Initiative route for its Drive for Hope fundraiser. The Cayenne Crossing Drive for Hope, to be held in early 2003, will support the Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization that is seeking a cure for cancer. The cross-country marathon will feature the upcoming Porsche Cayenne.

Counted among the partners in the Cayenne Crossing is the Porsche Club of America (PCA), the world's largest single marque club. Fifty thousand members strong, PCA joined with Porsche last year to assist with its 50-State Drive for Hope. PCA members raised thousands for the Hope Foundation. This year, PCA has agreed to support the Cayenne Crossing Initiative as a way of promoting volunteerism among its member clubs.

Porsche Cars North America, Inc., based in Atlanta, Ga., and its subsidiary, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., are the exclusive importers of Porsche vehicles for the United States and Canada. A wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Dr. Ing. h.c.F. Porsche AG, PCNA employs approximately 200 people who provide Porsche vehicles, parts, marketing and training for its 204 dealers in North America. They, in turn, provide Porsche owners with best-in- class service.
