FYI: Special Michelin tires for Porsche
I just had all 4 tires (18") replaced with Michelin... I used Custon Alignment in Mt View Ca,,, They used a Hunter balance machine...
C.A. was very helpful and advised me of a fact that Mischelin had special tires made exclusively for Porsche in each of the tire sizes...called "1N" catagory... I confirm it when browsing through Tire Rack Internet catalog... I've now driven my new tires over 100 miles and it rides sooooo smooth I'm convinced now... Hunter dynamic balancing is the only way to do it right!!! Michelin has special tires earmarked for Porsche... Geoc in P.A. White '99 Tip |

Re: FYI: Special Michelin tires for Porsche
And so do Dunlop, Conti, Pirelli, Yoko... Have for years. The "N" designations are just the Porsche factory putting their seal of approval on a certain tire and it's continued improvements N1-N2 etc. Doesn't mean you can't put other tires on that are just as good just not "recongnized " By the factory.

Actually, Michelin doessss make special tires just for Porsche.
They're called Pilot Sport Cups are only produced in Porsche sizes. Interestingly, they are not N rated. Like Dan said, the N rating just means Porsche approves and they only bother testing tires that are general in purpose. The Cups are racing compounds and those that buy them don't look for N ratings. Other great tires you should try if you want to optimize performance without going to racing compounds include the BFG Comp TA KDs. Goodyear also makes a tire which is comparable to the KDs. Both are lightyears ahead of the rest in terms of grip. Wear is quick and the ride is loud and harsh but just a degree more than other high performance tires.
