Porsches at Monterey

By Prescott Kelly
With Porsche the featured marque at the Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca in August, PCAers might benefit from a roadmap to the numerous events. “Historics week” has grown into ten-days of all cars all the time. While admittedly partial to PCA Monterey Bay Region’s excellent events, here’s one long-term enthusiast’s overview of all that will happen August 8 through 17.

  • For early birds, limited but inexpensive access to the historic racecars will be available at the Pre-Historics weekend, Saturday-Sunday, August 8-9at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. It will not have all the cars that will be at the Historics and there is no paddock access unless you can get affiliated with a team, but the grandstands are open. There will be no ticket presale, so just show up.
  • Tuesday, August 11 – PCA’s Monterey Bay Region is co-operating with the Carmel-by-the-Sea “Concours on the Avenue,” to include all marques to 1973. A number of your PCA buddies will be judges, including Bruce Anderson and yours truly. See www.motorclubevents.com for details

the PreHistorics are over. Saturday and Sunday hosted a TON of cars and lots of Speeders, some 904s and Spyders and various 911's on the track - the paddock was closed but not tightly and the crowds were sparse - very easy in-and-out and movement around the track (and Paddock). no ticket price - you just pay your $6 to enter 'the park' - some of my friends from the Speedster replica group brought RV's and 'camped' at the track - a great, low-hassel way to see the world's finest vintage race cars doing what they were designed to do. Next weekend will add the excitement of the 'Big Event' - with crowds and lots of interesting vendors - but also traffic, crowds, and a bit more cost.
.
One reason I like the PH weekend is that most of the Photographer 'cut outs' in the fences are open to visitors - which makes for much better photography than trying to shoot over and through fences...I'll post a link to photos as soon as I finish editing.....and uploading them to www.spydersite.com
.
We'll also participate (with the Spyder replica) in the Pacific Grove Concours/Rally this Friday - informal 'bring what you got' car show Friday afternoon 1-5 followed by a police escorted rally around 17 mile drive, Carmel and Pebble Beach - with surrounding crowds all along the route - it's a hoot! (http://www.pgautorally.org/ ). I'm guessing it's fully booked for this year - but a fun-to-watch event and interesting informal carshow with $0 entry fee - downtown Pacific Grove 1pm - 5pm followed by 17 mile drive route for Rally and bbq dinner.
.
if you're trying to keep up with EVERYthing going on this next week or so - try the
Carmel Pinecone - last year's Concours Week issue is online at: www.pineconearchive.com/080808PCCDE.pdf
.
Enjoy!!!
