Are we changing the oil too often?

Quote from LNengineering

Failure to use the right oil, use proper filtration, or observe proper changing intervals can affect the performance of even the best motor oil. This also includes changing the oil too often (needlessly bad for the environment and your wallet) or not often enough. Against conventional wisdom, engine wear decreases as oil ages to a certain extent, which means that changing your oil more frequently actually causes engine wear; these findings were substantiated by studies conducted by the auto manufacturers and petroleum companies, leading to standard drain intervals increased from 3,000mi/3 months to 5,000-7,500mi/6 months in most domestic vehicles, using mostly non-synthetic oils. Based off of extremely long drain intervals recommended by most European manufacturers, some in excess of two years and 20,000 mi, some users have found it best to reduce those intervals by half or even a quarter.

I believe that statement is based on "normal" driving but variables such as AX and tracking will affect the duration between changes. For my Box Porsche recommends 15K with 0-40 wt Mobile1 for "normal" driving. If I adhered to this schedule it may be as much as two years between oil changes. Two Porsche shops I use for maintenance and repairs have recommended 7500 mi. oil and filter changes for my car based on the kind of driving I do and not the number of miles or time intervals.

I have always changed my oil at 3000 miles and have been doing so with the Boxster. I think I will let it go to 4000 - 5000 miles (I just think 7000 miles is too long!!).
Most fun on 4 wheels. 03 S Midnight Blue Metallic.

I use 7500 miles as my oil change interval, and must admit that the Mobil 1 still looks very clear. Does NAPA or folks like that conduct oil analysis?

I have followed the 15k recommendation for my '99 up to 75k. After reading all the oil breakdown posts on numerous forums, I decided to change at 82,500, and will maintain that 7500 mile interval going forward. A DIY with M-1 or Castrol Full Syn from WalMart and a filter bought online runs ~$50, so I can't think of any reason to go beyond that.

Like george g I change oil and filter yearly which means 5-6 k miles. 5W-40 full synthetic Motul 300V at last change. And LN's spin-on filter adapter.

3000 is to soon for a syn, but that is what I used to do with my DDs and 914 on dino oil.

Porsche TSB approves three SAE specs: 0W-40, 5W-40, and 5W-50.
