Stuck Cup Holder

(If there is already a thread on this somewhere, I apologize. I tried "cup holder" in a search and found no matches.)

Last time I pushed the cup holder back in I felt some resistance. Never happened before this. Should have stopped and heeded the warning. Now it is stuck shut.

I am afraid to pull too hard on the weak plastic fascia. I took the radio out and tried to get at it from behind but could not access it. I'd rather not try to jimmy it with a screwdriver or something, unless there is a secret technique to doing so. I'm wary because I guess I'd rather have an inoperative cup holder than a broken piece of plastic on the dash.

Any suggestions? Any web links to fixes on the web? If it makes any difference, it is a 2003 Boxster. Meanwhile, I'll keep searching the web. Thanks for your time if you can advise me.

This doesn't solve your broken cup holder, but since I found this product I haven't used my stock ones.

They are much more stable and useable than the ones that came in my car.

Not cheap ($25 + shipping), but looks really good (functionality wise)! Altho my car does have cupholders (MY01), its good only for holding those small starbucks frappuccino glass bottles -- nothing bigger fits. And of course you can rule out any kind of spirited driving with that -- getting plonked in the head with a flying glass bottle ain't my idea of fun :)

you have to pry the face panel from the cup holder
then you see 4 screws which hold the cup assembly holder in place
loose these screws and you can take the whole cup holder assembly out
You *might* also have to take out the "horse shoe". In case of my car I can wiggle the cup holder out without removing the horseshoe

Additional tip:
After you have the cup holder out, throw it in the garbage and fillthe open spot with something useful, like a double height radio :D

I also have this problem. One of my cup holders has been stuck in since I bought the car. I never use the cup holders so it's not a big deal but I'd like to get it working.

I'd sell you mine if you'd like.

It's removed from a 996 that's going to have the GT3 Console Delete kit installed.

Well, my so-called "ultimate cup-holder" would be this one:
