Question Porsche 928S, 1988 originally from Manhatten

Our Porsche now lives in Spain, recently our garage said we need a new odometer (tripmeter) sensor as it is not working, we bought one from Porsche Stuttgart, had it fitted and still nothing, as we are not mechanically minded we need to know what else it could be, the garage is not helpful. Can anyone on Babblers help with ideas!
